Chiusi della Verna, a small town on the borders of the Province of Arezzo, has been renowned for centuries for the homonymous sanctuary.
Located in the heart of the “Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi” (Casentino Forests Park), it stands out in the Tuscan Apennines with its 1283m height and it is visible from the nearby valleys of the Casentino and the upper Tiber valley.
The great Sanctuary of La Verna rises on top of a rocky ridge surrounded by the forest.
In this isolated and spiritual place, St. Francis of Assisi used to stay for long periods. Right here in the summer of 1224 he received the stigmata. The mountain was donated to him in 1213 by Orlando Catani, Count of Chiusi in Casentino.
Nearby there is another important place of worship, the Camaldoli Monastery.
Spending a few days or just a few hours to visit it, allows you to seek peace and serenity, relax yourself to escape from the daily routine and stress imposed by the rhythms of contemporary life.
Furthermore, it is possible to buy natural medicines composed of herbs from the surrounding area, made by the expert hands of the Franciscan friars.
In addition to the monastic complex, of particular interest is the visit to “Sasso Spicco”, a protruding rock that is resting on top of another rock in such a way as to seem suspended.
Visit the Sanctuary and its surroundings for half a day, then immerse yourself in the woods in search of precious truffles or vice versa, it can be an original idea to spend a day discovering hidden Tuscany.
In fact, in 20 minutes from Verna, you are able to reach our first cultivated truffle plantation.
